Amhuinnsuidhe castle is situated in a stunning and romantic seaside location with views to South Harris and the islands beyond and is world famous for its sea trout and salmon fishing. A stay at Amhuinnsuidhe Castle is a memorable Scottish island castle experience. Live in an unspoilt widerness, with easy access from the airport at Stornoway, served by the Scottish international airports of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness.

What a place Amhuinnsuidhe Castle is, a glimpse of paradise, and surely the best place on earth. I go into a trance just thinking about it. It's the memories, hundreds of them going back about thirty-eight years, they have a clarity like no other memories.

The castle name “Amhuinnsuidhe” is the Gaelic for “sitting by the river” and, indeed, one of the fishing rivers enters the sea next to the castle.

The castle has its own hillside gardens and is surrounded by 55,000 glorious acres of Trust-owned land – designated under European legislation for its plant and bird life, and a paradise of steep hills and sea cliffs, white sand beaches and turquoise seas, remote glens and lochs.

Designed in the Scottish Baronial castle style by the architect David Bryce and built in 1865 for the 7th Earl of Dunmore, the castle now functions as a prestigious venue for house parties.

The sale of the original North Harris Estate in 2003 inaugurated a new era of estate proprietorship. In what has been acknowledged as Scotland’s biggest friendly land buy-out, the 55,000 acre North Harris Estate was purchased in a joint bid by the residents of North Harris and Ian Scarr-Hall. The new owner is committed to helping ensure the long-term environmental and economic sustainability of this exceptional estate.
