Location
The castle has an unparalleled position at the geographic
centre of the British Isles in the upper reaches of the Eden
Valley at the foot of the North Pennines.

The North
Pennines is an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty', bounded
by three of England's largest national parks. You
can relax, take your time to explore the countryside, visit
many unique historic sites, call at arts and crafts workshops,
stroll around small towns on market days, or see sheepdog
trials and traditional agricultural shows.
Fine pubs
or cafés are always close at hand reflecting the local flavour;
they serve excellent food and many have full restaurant facilities.

scenery and walking in Britain.

The
historic cities of Carlisle, Lancaster, Durham, York
and Chester are an easy day trip as are many of Britain's
finest country houses. Manchester,
Leeds and Newcastle, all within two hours' drive, offer
first class shopping, theatres, galleries and museums.
Ten
minutes' drive to the south are the Yorkshire Dales
and half an hour west is the Lake District. North of
Augill is Hadrian's Wall and the Northumberland National
Park.
