Seals

Orkney is truly a birdwatcher's paradise with thousands making the pilgrimage every year.

8000 hectares of nature reserve land are managed by the RSPB and vast numbers of birds nest here. While May to mid-July is the best time to see most common species including the famous and elusive Puffin, Late spring and the turn of autumn bring migratory visitors and unusual sightings are commonplace!

The islands include Europe's most important breeding grounds, with the more secluded beaches and skerries being the favoured seal haul-outs. However, seals can often be seen in the water from Orkney's many sandy beaches. One tip is to whistle to them in the sea - these curious creatures will swim closer for a photo opportunity!
