The newly restored Barholm CastleRenovated from a RuinSelf Catering Stays

An example of the accommodationBarholm Castle, 16th century former home of a branch of the McCulloch clan, is situated high above the Galloway coast, with breathtaking views across the sweep of Wigton Bay and, on a clear day, all the way to the Isle of Man.

You can have exclusive use of this romantic five-storey Scottish castle for a weekend or longer and live like a laird. Sir Walter Scott is reputed to have used Barholm as the model for ‘Ellangowan’ in his novel of 1815, Guy Mannering. Recently restored from a ruinous state to the very highest standards, with financial aid and expert support from Historic Scotland, the castle combines the atmosphere of late Mediaeval times with the comfort and technology of the 21st century, discreetly installed.
