Local rambles:
Take a half-hour walk down to the sea, by a secret (and somewhat hazardous!) path through a wooded ravine opposite the road end, which passes the almost-hidden 18th century icehouse of Kirkdale House and leads to a deserted rocky beach. Just half a mile along the beach you will come to Dirk Hatterick’s Cave which, according to local legend, leads to the castle by a secret underground passage. (Entry to the cave is extremely steep and dark and not at all recommended for the safety conscious or fainthearted!)

One mile away, as the crow flies (or two by road), is Cairn Holy, a pair of prehistoric burial chambers with gigantic standing stones, dating to between 6000 and 4000 BC. They are quite spectacular in their setting in the hills. A visit at sunset is recommended.
