Places to visit:

  • Cardoness Castle, 5 miles east along the coast. A splendid cliff-top ruin, in the care of Historic Scotland.
  • Carsluith Castle, 3 miles west along the coast. Another ruin, of a similar size to Barholm, and also in the care of Historic Scotland.
  • Threave Castle, a huge and dramatic 15th century ruin, built on an island near Castle Douglas by Archibald the Grim. Ring the bell for the custodian and he will bring the boat across the loch to pick you up and take you to the castle.
  • McLellans Castle in Kirkcudbright, by the pretty harbour.

Gatehouse of Fleet has a number of interesting shops, including a well-stocked bookshop (selling both new and secondhand books) within the Mill on the Fleet – an award-winning local history museum. In the summer, boat trips run daily on the river at Kirkcudbright, starting from the harbour, by the tourist office.

There is a small conservation zoo near Kirkcudbright.
The Cream o’ Galloway ice cream farm is a big hit with children, as it has a huge woodland adventure playground for all age groups. It also sells wonderful organic ice cream and yogurt, and organic meat from the farm.
Newton Stewart, a pretty market town 15 miles away, has a cinema and some interesting shops.
