Coombe Abbey, originally known as The Abbey of Cumbe, was founded by Costercian monks in 1150. It remained in their hands until 1540 when, during the dissolution of the monasteries, Coombe Abbey and its grounds were surrendered to Dr. London, sent by Thomas Cromwell.
It was inhabited by a number of notable figures, including Princess Elizabeth, daughter of James I, who came to live and be educated at the abbey.

After a number of owners throughout the 20th century, Coventry City Council purchased the abbey and its estate in 1950.
The restoration of the property began in 1992 and, 2 years later, the hotel was opened with 63 bedrooms. A further 20 bedrooms were added when the east wing was re-opened in July 1999.
Coombe Abbey goes from strength to strength and is well established as a member of the 'No Ordinary Hotel' group. Enjoy a visit to Coombe Abbey and you too will become part of the proud history.
