lochs and mountains in abundance. The

the legendary banks of Loch Lomond, or the A814 through Helensburgh
and up the side of the Gare Loch. Both routes converge at Arrochar,
and the A83 then goes across the head of Loch Long, through the
mountainous fringes of the Argyll Forest Parks and over the appropriately
named Rest and Be Thankful, towards Inveraray and Campbeltown, taking
the A815 turn-off. Sweeping down through Glen Kinglas, the road

Cowal
Highland Gathering
The big event in the Cowal calendar is undoubtedly the Cowal Highland
Gathering, the largest of its kind anywhere in the world. Each year
on the last weekend in August the bunting goes up and thousands
of pipers, Highland dancers, descend on Dunoon. The event has now
been going for over 100 years and is without question the most spectacular
of its kind in the world, attended by tens of thousands of visitors.
Competition is fierce for the prospect of winning at Cowal with
competitors coming from all over the world to participate.
