Melville Castle is fortunate to have several good fisheries and lochs
near by, and not to forget the North Esk River that meanders its way through
the castle's grounds.
With a copious supply of eager fish, and expert tuition, Melville Castle
caters for all levels of angler.
The North Esk rises in the North Esk Reservoir in the Pentland Hills,
approximately 15 miles from Melville Castle. It flows north-east past
several Midlothian towns, eventually arriving at Melville Castle.
The river converges with the South Esk River as it approaches the grounds
of Dalkeith Palace. The River Esk then continues north for about 7 km,
flowing into the Firth of Forth at Musselburgh.
The North Esk River is home to the Brown Trout, and as a long section
of the river is privately owned by the castle, hotel guests have exclusive
use. It is a beautiful and unique setting, with the castle and wooded
grounds forming the perfect backdrop.
Just 20 minutes' drive from the castle is the Markle Fishery, which consists
of two game fishing lochs and a course fishing pool. The game fishing
includes rainbow, brown, golden and tiger trout. Equipment hire and tuition
are available.
Markle provides a range of tickets and fishing options to suit beginner
or expert alike, and especially welcomes families.
The Tweed River is considered by some to be the best salmon fishing river
in the world. Melville Castle has teamed up with FishTweed, a one-stop
shop for salmon fishing on the Tweed, to offer access to this beautiful
river.
FishTweed is based in Kelso, the nearest town to the Tweed, which is
approximately a 1 hour drive from the Melville Estate.
FishTweed also offer the necessary equipment and expertise required to
make the most of your salmon experience.
