Activities

Shieldhill Castle offers the ability to combine a corporate function or conference with outdoor pursuits, sports, and team-building events.

Contact us with your requirements and one of our experienced team will create a schedule of events for you.

SHOOTING
Shieldhill is the regular base for many parties enjoying Grouse, Partridge and Pheasant Shooting in the area. Days can be arranged on several leading estates varying from large driven days to smaller walked up sport, or stalking. These can be tailored to suit your needs. Clay and Laser Shooting can
also be offered to compliment a shooting trip or as part of a mixed activity break.

Collection from Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports can be arranged, as can transport from Shieldhill to and from the shooting estates.

A purpose designed gun and rod room will allow your guns to be kept well and in perfect safety.

A superb private dining room is available to give your party extra atmosphere, at no extra cost.

If you are considering bringing a shooting party to Scotland, give us a call and we will happily discuss your requirements.

DEER STALKING
Stalking is available for both roe and red deer. This can be planned locally, directly from Shieldhill Castle, or as an add on to your stay as a guided trip to the Scottish Highlands.

FISHING
Clyde
Shieldhill Castle is within 2 miles of one of the most beautiful stretches of the upper Clyde. Although there are no salmon in the upper Clyde (they cannot pass the falls of Clyde at New Lanark), the river is well known for it's trout and especially it's grayling. Rods on a private beat can be arranged for you.

Tweed
The Tweed is one of the most productive salmon rivers in Western Europe and fishing can be organised for you on several beats. They are about half an hour from Shieldhill, and transport and a gillie can be laid on.

Nith
The Nith is the famous salmon and sea trout river that flows through Dumfries and meets the sea at the Solway firth. Several beats are available on the middle and upper Nith with or without a ghillie. Some of the best fishing is during September and October and as such a day or two on the Nith can be a very enjoyable compliment to a day or two at grouse or partridge.

Loch Fishing
Several lochs are available within easy reach of Shieldhill and can cater for fishermen with varying degrees of experience.

The castle staff are very willing to advise you on what is available at any time and to arrange bookings and transport for you.

A vital part of any fishing trip is the ambience of your hotel. As keen fishermen, the staff assure you of a warm and friendly welcome.

GOLF
Shieldhill Castle is situated just an hour from Muirfield and an hour and a half from Troon, Turnberry and St Andrews. Other fine local courses are close by Shieldhill, including championship standard courses at West Linton and Lanark.

Whatever standard of golf you are looking to play, whether as part of a shooting or fishing trip; or just in it's own right, the castle staff are here to help you. Let them know where and when you want to play and they will do the rest, including booking, catering and transport if required.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
Shieldhill Castle's central location makes it ideal, not just for a variety of sporting venues, but also as a centre for those wanting to be otherwise entertained whilst the guns are shooting and the rods are casting, or who want to add something to their sporting visit.

Edinburgh and Glasgow are both less than an hour away and transport or hosted trips can be arranged. The Scottish Borders are very accessible and are steeped in history and beauty.

The Ayrshire coast is noted for its golf courses and seascapes. For those with parties shooting at Mennock and Drumlanrig, or fishing on the Nith, a trip around the famous Drumlanrig Castle is thoroughly recommended.

Laser shooting can be organised for you within the grounds of Shieldhill and is great fun for shooters and non-shooters alike.

The Mennock River is the centre of the well-known Mennock shoot, mentioned above, but is also acknowledged as containing more gold than any river in America or Australia. It will never make you rich, but supervised gold panning trips can be organised from Shieldhill that will give you a unique opportunity to see this beautiful area and, perhaps, leave with a little gold of your own (dependant on season and the state of the water).

Or perhaps you have ideas of your own, just let us know and we will do our best to help.

PRICES
Shoot prices will vary with your choice of venue, as well as the size and number of days required. The castle's aim is to tailor a trip to suit your exact requirements. However, you can be confident that you will beoffered the very best sport and the lowest possible price. Most of the castle's guests return year after year and they want you to do the same!
