Home > Gardens

The gardens of the château had been uncared for when Lord and Lady Hamlyn became the owners in 1987. The only visible shapes were the crossed paths in the orchard garden, the linden trees from the Salon d’Ombrage and the terrace yews deteriorating from lack of care. The project was to recapture the garden in its original state.

The landscape architects chose lawn paths, aisles of yews (about 2000), and different varieties of cherry trees (106) and a boscage landscape composed of about 300 scrubs (elder trees, hazelnut trees, amelanchiers), giving the landscape a rustic look, a marvellous complement to the golden stones. The shape of the former garden was kept (door of the Salle des gardes, double entrance stairways, water fountain and former cave).

There are few flowers other than lavender on the terrace and flowered walls of antirrhinum.

Since it is a hotel, many areas of Château de Bagnols were originally planned for relaxation, especially the Salon d’Ombrage, with its 41 sun shading linden trees and its magnificent April blooming lilacs.

In the rear area of the park stands a small aromatic garden, interestingly designed in the shape of the British flag for the owner, Lady Hamlyn.

Three years ago, part of the park was created, downwards from the orchard, surrounding the Roman pool. The creator respected the architecture of the whole park in general, giving great importance to the lawn and to rustic species. He chose flowering cherry trees (40), fruits cherry trees (37) and blackberry plane trees (14) to shade the swimming area. This parcel is delimited by an aisle of yews (500) and above this new creation there is an aisle of boscage landscaping composed of 350 shrubs which serves as a screen for privacy.
