France is renowned for being the most romantic country in which to get married. Having a ceremony at an historic château certainly adds to the romance and, price wise, compares favourably with a traditional wedding in the UK - the regulations however are more complicated .

Basically you can only officially get married in a Town Hall after fulfilling various requirements, such as 40 day minimum residency, letter from a French lawyer to prove your marriage would be legal, certificate of health from a French doctor and proof of identity. Once you have been officially married, then you are free to have a religious ceremony in any venue of your choice.

If you have had a registry office wedding in the UK, then an official translation of the marriage certificate and proof of identity is basically all that is required to have a religious ceremony in France.
