The Anjou
region is heavily populated with châteaux, each of which have their
own special place in history. Listed among the top visitor attractions
include:
Château du Plessis Bourre - One of the
finest castles in Anjou lies only ten minutes from Les Briottières.
Built in 1468, it's enjoyed a colourful history and today the château
opens its doors to the public. Nowadays, its descendants, represented
by the family of Antoinette and Bruno de Sauvebeuf, who reside at
the property all year, give the responsibility to preserve its authentic
and family flavour.
Château d' Angers - This château, built
in the early 13th century by King Louis IX, is characterised by
its pentagonal wall, nearly a kilometre long, bulging with 17 massive
towers. Inside are its hanging gardens and the famous Apocalypse
Tapestry (1370), the largest piece of Medieval weaving in the world,
at over 100 metres long.
Château de Serrant - A 16th century château,
whose reputation for housing the finest French furniture is renowned.
As well as the incredible interior and oustanding library, Serrant's
previous guests have included Louis the XIV, Napoleon and the British
Queen Mum in 1981.
For those wanting to explore the activity options open to them locally,
then the Anjou Golf & Country Club lies just 4 km away and canoeing
on the River Mayenne, which is a 10 km drive, can be arranged. |
