There is something unique about Scotland: it is an outstanding country by any standard – with rich and rugged landscapes, dramatic history, heritage and packed full of romantic castles. If this is not enough to tempt you, I do not know what is!
I am driving north from Glasgow past Stirling Castle and the National Wallace Monument which, if you climb to the top, rewards you with great panoramic views of the Trossachs. You can give yourself a break on the way up as you stop on various levels to learn more about the story of William Wallace.
As I continue through the village of Dollar to join the M90 at Kinross, I start to head towards Perth, one of the jewel cities and a doorway to the Scottish Highlands. This is a wonderful drive as you head down, with views of the Tay valley, then over the road bridge at Perth to Dundee the beauty of the North East of Scotland really stands out on this crisp autumn day.
We are heading further north to Kinnettles, located in Angus, a little village near to Forfar. The word ‘Kinnettles’ means ‘the head of the bog’; I don’t see any bogs although I am sure there are plenty in them there hills!
Set in and surrounded by 44 acres, this exclusive venue is hidden just 20 minutes from Dundee Airport, with easy access from Edinburgh 70 miles (90 minutes) and Glasgow roughly 100 miles (120 minutes) away.
If you like fresh air, a walk in the glens around this area gives you a sense of freedom within this wonderfully beautiful location. You can walk for hours up to the top of a glen and never meet a soul. You might think of an early morning balloon ride with a picnic for lunch just after you have glided over a Scottish loch.
If you are a golfer, this could be the closest thing to golf heaven you could get. Just 30 minutes from Carnoustie and 45 minutes from St Andrews, Carnoustie being home of the Open Championship 1931, 1937, 1953, 1968, 1975, 1999 and 2007 – host of the Seniors Open 2010 and the Women’s British Open 2011. St Andrews needs no introductions and you could also plan to play The Castle Course, which was opened in July 2008 by HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York; it is the newest addition to the St Andrews’ golf experience. In addition to these great courses, you also have the choice of a further 30 golf courses in and around the area.
From the most picturesque scenes as far as the eye can see, panoramic glens, breath taking countryside, quaint villages to bustling towns and coastal locations, the non-golfer and those looking for an excellent 19th hole are well catered for!
Kinnettles Castle is great for families and groups of friends just wanting to get away for quality time together in a luxurious relaxing Scottish Baronial castle. It is spacious enough to allow you all to have your own space and, when you come together, it offers you a warm and inviting atmosphere. It would also be a fantastic wedding venue for a long weekend.
You can enjoy a sumptuous dinner cooked and served to you in ‘Butler and Maid’ style service, or let your imagination run wild and cook up a feast for yourselves in the fully equipped kitchen, complete with AGA.
Kinnettles Castle is truly magnificent. With nine bedroom suites in the castle and two further suites in the gate lodge, it sleeps a total of 22 guests.
Make your next trip to Scotland create a lasting memory.
