"We had a truly magical time at Barholm. The castle has been lovingly restored to a very high specification. We particularly liked the Great Hall with its painted ceiling, and the main bedroom, with its four poster bed and as for the en-suite, "en" must stand for enormous!"
Phil Rowlands, Cheltenham
Barholm Castle, 16th century former home of a branch of the McCulloch clan, is situated high above the Galloway coast, with breathtaking views across the sweep of Wigton Bay and, on a clear day, all the way to the Isle of Man.
You can have exclusive use of this romantic five-storey Scottish castle for a weekend or longer and live like a laird. Sir Walter Scott is reputed to have used Barholm as the model for ‘Ellangowan’ in his novel of 1815, Guy Mannering. Recently restored from a ruinous state to the very highest standards, with financial aid and expert support from Historic Scotland, the castle combines the atmosphere of late Mediaeval times with the comfort and technology of the 21st century, discreetly installed.
