CIVIL CEREMONIES

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
An increasingly large number of castles have successfully applied for a civil licence, which allows for non-religious wedding ceremonies to be held in the castle or grounds. Licences for civil partnerships for same-sex couples are also now increasingly common.

Ireland
As of November 2007, civil ceremonies can now be held in venues other than a church or registry office, including Irish castles. The licensing works differently from the UK in that a licence application must be submitted for every civil ceremony set to take place. This means that Irish properties themselves never have an actual licence, rather it is the marrying couple who must obtain their individual licence. Whilst some castles won't be hosting civil ceremonies for varying reasons, there should be little trouble obtaining a licence at a venue that has previously been approved.

Weddings in France
The law in France states that you have to be 'legally married' at the Town Hall, which is a fairly quick procedure, and then you can go to the church for your service. If you do not wish to have a church service then you do not have to. It is not, however, possible to have a marriage service in a château. It is also a legal requirement that couples holding their weddings in France must live there for at least 40 days in advance of the wedding date.
