Working at Celtic Castles we are very privileged to be able to stay at lots of castle properties across the UK, Ireland and France. In fact, if ever you call the Celtic Castles office, you'll more than likely get through to someone who has visited the properties you may be interested in. As a result, we are able to give you first-hand information about the type of experience you can expect to receive, to help you make a more informed decision about the most suitable venue for your particular stay in a castle.
One question we are often asked is, 'what is your favourite castle?' This is really difficult to answer as I love so many of them for very different reasons.
If, however, I were asked to compile a bucket list of castle stays, these would all feature for the following reasons:
Borthwick Castle, Scotland
Recently renovated to a 5* standard, you can almost touch the history as you wander through the rooms and up the spiral staircases of this property. Sleep in the bed-chamber once occupied by Mary Queen of Scots...but beware of the resident ghost! A candle-lit meal in the awesome Great Hall takes some beating.
Wilton Castle, Ireland
Owner Sean's attention to detail and keenness to please will ensure you come away with memories to last a life-time...for all the right reasons. Very competitively priced, with rooms starting at just €150 for 2 guests, you can enjoy a truly historic castle experience (the castle dates back to 1247) without it breaking the bank. With a number of suites sleeping several guests, this is a great option for those looking for family stays.
Ballynahinch Castle, Ireland
Service, service, service! The reviews from those who visit Ballynahinch are consistently exceptional. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff who proudly welcome guests to their haven of luxury, overlooking the famous Ballynahinch Salmon River, surrounded by the splendour of the Twelve Bens Mountain Range. Ballynahinch offers a range of packages to suit the interests of its guests...I think I'd find the Duvet Day Package most appealing!
Aldourie Castle, Scotland
The only habitable castle on the banks of Loch Ness...what better location could you find anywhere? With a fairytale grandeur and glamour, turrets and towers galore, Aldourie blazes with warmth and hospitality. The castle itself is available for exclusive lets only (sleeping up to 29 guests) plus there are a number of vacation-rental cottages on the estate for smaller family groups looking for a self-catering holiday let. Just be mindful that Nessie may join you for breakfast!
Swinton Park, England
Whatever your interest, this property offers it all; from fine dining in Samuel's, the highly acclaimed 3 AA Rosette Restaurant, to a relaxed meal in the local pub; or from a relaxing spa experience, to the development of your culinary skills at The Cookery School. Ancestral home of the Cunliffe-Listers, Swinton Park exudes the traditional warmth of a family home with all the modern creature comforts of a contemporary hotel. And for those animal-lovers amongst you, Swinton Park is one of the few pet-friendly castle properties you can stay in...so you are very welcome to bring ALL the family!
Whatever your interest, whatever your budget, we may just have the perfect castle property for your 'bucket wish list'. Call on the experience of the team here at Celtic Castles...we'd be delighted to help make your dreams come true...!
