Lucy’s Scottish Castle Tour. Part 8: Cringletie House

So we are back in the car and headed to our final castle.

As we head back down the mountains, the journey from the Cairngorms is stunning; delightful scenery all around and winding roads leading us back down the hill. We arrive at our final stop, which is Cringletie House Hotel. Cringletie is described as a luxurious Country House Hotel and is located just outside Peebles, in the Scottish Borders. The property is only 30 minutes south of Edinburgh, offering an ideal country location within easy reach of the city.

From the main road, you head up the long driveway and this charming property appears before you. It is said that the word Cringletie derives from the name Crelenge, a landowner who lived in the area in the 13th century.

As we head in to the castle, the entrance boasts the achievements of the property proudly displayed by the door. For those who like the outdoors there is a brightly coloured selection of wellington boots to borrow!

We are checked in and greeted by Lucy, who works at the castle reception. I take a tour of Cringletie with Johanna the owner who proudly tells me all about the property and its history. The work and care that has gone in to the property and the rooms is clear to see, with all of the rooms being individually designed. They have created a luxurious property for the 21st century, but retained the charm of the house's Victorian heritage.

Cringletie offers Classic and Luxury Rooms and then Junior Suites and the Selkirk Suite. All of the rooms are named after places in the local area giving a real sense of belonging.

After touring the castle, we take a short drive in to Peebles to see the local area. The area is so picturesque and full of character. The river Tweed runs through the town adding to the beauty. For children there is a park by the river, which Jasmine highly recommends!

We head back to Cringletie to explore the grounds. The hotel is set in 28 acres, perfect for enjoying a woodland walk or a stroll through the walled gardens. Jasmine loved the play area, complete with a trampoline, swing and slide.

After exploring the property, it is time to experience dinner, the Sutherland Restaurant was awarded the prestigious 3 AA Rosettes in September 2012 so it is a real delight to eat dinner at the property. We are served by Tom, who is a charming host. The restaurant offers fine dining with great views across the grounds. After dinner guests can relax in the lounge and enjoy a drink or two.

So the final morning of our tour, we are headed home today, but not before a Cringletie breakfast! We sat at a window table and watched the rabbits play in the grounds. The breakfast menu is delightful, with fresh juices and smoothies on offer, along with a selection of cereals, pastries and a full cooked Scottish breakfast.

After breakfast we head in to the grounds again; they are so lovely it is a shame not to make the most of them. We say our goodbyes to the team and we put our bags in the car for the final time. Cringletie offers a delightful experience for those looking for a little luxury, complete with glorious grounds. Certainly a place you would want to return.

On the journey home, we make a stop at Barony Castle, which is only 5 minutes from Cringletie. I get to meet Joanne and the team and take a tour of the castle.

We also make our final stop at Traquair House. A great treat for Jasmine to wander around visit the animals and play in the playground. Traquair is a destination in itself, there is the museum to explore, a brewery and a gift shop, and even a maze. There are just 3 rooms at the property, making a stay here really special.

So we are homeward bound, lots of castles seen and some fabulous people met. The castle tour has been a real experience. I must express a big thank you to all of the castle owners and staff who have offered amazing hospitality and service during our stay.
