A castle tour perfect for lovers of all things outdoors!

This six-night tour features stunning scenery, wonderful walks and wildlife; take in two of Scotland's most popular destinations and explore the lesser known, totally unspoiled, western peninsula of Ardnamurchan - stay in a lovingly restored luxury castle overlooking the sea, with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Day 1

Barcaldine castle

Make your way to Barcaldine Castle, and spend two nights at this beautiful 17th-century tower. It is located just nine miles north of Oban (Little Bay), a town and port in western Scotland, often referred to as the gateway to the Hebridean islands. Seafood fans rejoice as there are eateries galore in the harbour that stock the freshest catches you'll find anywhere in Scotland.

DAY 2

With ample to do in the surrounding area, venture out of town and discover Gylen Castle, one the seats of the Clan McDougall. On Loch Creran is the Scottish Sealife Sanctuary, with aquariums and a rescue centre attracting visitors from far and wide. Oban is a brilliant touring base, with castles, gardens, distilleries, beaches and villages to explore.

A scenic 2-hour journey, including a ferry ride from Oban to Craignure, leads you to your next stop - Glengorm Castle. This family-run bed & breakfast sits on the northern coast of Mull, the second largest of the Hebridean islands, and is surrounded by unspoilt beaches and wildlife.

DAY 4

With ample opportunity for walking, cycling and pony trekking, Glengorm is a perfect base for two nights of your castle tour.

The castle is just 15 minutes' drive west of Tobermory, the picturesque town renowned for its cluster of colourful houses on the waterfront. Day trips to the surrounding islands to see whales and dolphins in their natural habitat should be at the top of your 'to do' list!

DAY 5

Mingary castle

Catch the Tobermory to Kilchoan ferry and make your way to Mingary Castle. Recently saved from crumbling into the sea, this 17th-century castle stands proudly on a rocky outcrop in the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.

Ardnamurchan is a 50-square-mile peninsula on the west coast of Scotland, just north-east of Mull, renowned for its unspoiled landscape, iconic lighthouse and white sand beaches.

DAY 6

Two nights at Mingary Castle will give you ample time to visit Sanna Bay, with its white sands and clear blue sea, climb Ben Hiant for panoramic views of Mull, Coll and Skye - and the chance to see golden eagles! Red deer, amongst many other animals, freely roam this secluded part of the world.

GETTING THERE

Your first stop, Oban, is 2.5 hours from Glasgow, 3 hours from Edinburgh and 3 hours from Inverness. Hire a car at one of Scotland's major airports and embark on an exciting journey exploring the west coast. This route does include a couple of ferry journeys, but these only add to the sense of adventure!
