Thornbury Castle, a luxury English castle hotel with over 500 years of history, is very much the dominant feature in the small market town of Thornbury and serves as a great base from which to explore some of Britain's most renowned heritage sites.

Make the one-hour drive from Thornbury Castle to visit Stonehenge, arguably one of the world's most famous prehistoric monuments. If one of these fascinating circles isn't enough for you, why not stop off at Avebury Henge; a Neolithic monument halfway between Thornbury & Stone Henge?

After spending the morning admiring Stone Henge, head back towards the castle for an afternoon exploring the City of Bath; a UNESCO world heritage site and home to the famous Roman Baths, constructed in 70AD. Take a dip in the Thermae Bath Spa, visit the Georgian Royal Crescent or the Palladian Pulteney Bridge and round the day off in one of the city's many great restaurants before returning home to Thornbury for a restful sleep in one of the castle's sumptuous beds.

berkeley castle

Just 20 minutes' drive from Thornbury, in the county of Gloucestershire, stands Berkeley Castle, a Norman Fortress constructed in the 12th century. This family-owned castle offers a great day out. Come learn about murder, visit the King's Gallery where King Edward II met his fate and walk among furniture once owned by the legendary explorer Sir Francis Drake, as you look out across Berkeley Vale.

Slightly further afield (1 hour 30-minutes' drive) is the magnificent Blenheim Palace, another World Heritage site. Explore the only non-royal non-episcopal palace in England and marvel at its Baroque architecture. There is so much to see and do at this, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, that a day is almost not enough.

Alternatively, if traditional 'chocolate box villages' are more of your thing, then spend a day pottering around the many Cotswold villages; Bourton on the water, Stow on the Wold, Burford and Naunton are just a small selection of the honey-coloured villages that bring so many visitors, from all over the world, to this lovely part of England. with traditional tea rooms galore and gift shops full of crafts and clothing to tempt you.
