Activities at Ballynahinch Castle

There are some who visit Ballynahinch Castle and never leave the grounds - such is the choice of activities available.

Hiking, fly-fishing, tennis, cycling, or simply embracing the tranquillity of the grounds, listening to the song of the river as it makes its journey to the sea; there are so many ways to engage with Connemara.

One of the great attractions of Ballynahinch Castle is that all these activities are easily accessible, without difficulty, and delivered by enthusiastic professionals.

The Ballynahinch Catchment drains an area of 68 square miles and is a diverse system of interconnected loughs and rivers, drained by the Ballynahinch River and offering the very best of fly-fishing in Ireland.

This majestic river, with fishing rights owned exclusively by the Ballynahinch Estate, is home to over 70 casting piers, which were constructed on difficult throws when His Highness, The Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar, owned the fishery. Casting piers and fishing huts throughout the river enable anglers of all ages and experience to enjoy fishing at Ballynahinch.

The woodlands around the estate offer over five kilometres of woodland, lakeshore and riverside walks suitable for all. Further afield The Twelve Bens, Maumturk Mountains and surrounding countryside offer unlimited walking possibilities.

Island Experience

Take a guided boat trip of Roundstone Bay and visit the deserted, picturesque island of Inishlacken with a member of the Ballynahinch team, John Sullivan; an experienced skipper and lobster fisherman from the nearby island of Inishnee. On your journey you will visit the grey seal colony located in the Ballynahinch estuary, whilst also spotting numerous sea birds such as terns, guillemots, gannets plus other thriving fauna.

Clay Shooting

For both ladies and gentlemen, the complete novice who has never touched a gun, an experienced shot who would like to enjoy an hour's shooting or a competitor who needs some coaching with a problematic target, the Connemara Shooting School at Ballynahinch Castle Hotel will take you through every aspect of safety, gun handling and the methods for breaking all your targets.
