With more than 275 acres of Dartmoor National Park on its doorstep, you can count on there being something to suit everyone during a stay at Bovey Castle. Discover family activities with a selection of lazy thrills, such as making cider and sloe gin or archery, to high-octane outdoor adventures, such as clay pigeon shooting or falconry!

Archery & Air Rifle Shooting

Learn how to use a recurve bow, air rifle or air pistol and take a shot at a range of targets under expert supervision.

A sport older than Bovey Castle itself, experience the truly royal art with the resident, internationally-renowned, falconer Martin Whitley.

Hawk Walk

Go with Martin and fly Harris Hawks on a breathtaking part of Dartmoor. Not only do you have the chance to fly the birds in a natural environment, but you also get a real feel for Dartmoor (approximately 1.5 hours).

Fly Fishing

Fishing permits for residents and non-residents for the castle lakes and the rivers Bovey and Teign may be purchased directly from the castle.

Professional guiding is also available by arrangement, for the advancing and experienced angler.

Fly Fishing - Instruction

Fly fishing instruction and coaching sessions take place on the castle lakes, with the fully qualified resident instructor, Tim James.

A wonderful introduction to fly fishing, you will be taught the fundamentals of casting and will usually progress to the extent whereby you can fish. Places are limited to a maximum of 4 guests per session. There is a minimum age limit of 8 years. Private sessions may be available by prior appointment.

Hot Air Ballooning

What better way to experience Dartmoor National Park than with a birds-eye view? Launch from the castle grounds or a nearby locality and see the beauty of Dartmoor National Park from above. Flights take place in the early morning or the early evening.

Cider & Sloe Gin Making

Learn of the history of cider/sloe gin and how to make cider and sloe gin in the long barn. Start the cider making process by crushing the apples in the cider press, taste the freshly squeezed juice and, of course, sample some cider made by previous guests. During the autumn, fresh sloe berries are picked and used to make sloe gin. At other times, seasonal fruits are used.

This activity is interactive and involves some physical effort by participants; a minimum of 4 guests is required to work the presses.

Clay Pigeon Shooting

Hidden away on the Bovey estate is a small clay shooting venue. Aimed at beginners and novice shooters, it is an opportunity to try your hand at this exciting country pursuit. Full instruction is given; this is a very popular choice all year round.

Bovey Rangers

Supervised indoor and outdoor activity sessions for 7 to 14 year olds, during school holidays and half term breaks. Perfect for keeping younger guests entertained while you enjoy the hotel facilities!

Bovey Ranger activities include survival skills, such as camp fire building, building shelters and camouflage face painting, mega ball games, archery, apple pressing, pond dipping, raft building, canoeing, golf lessons and moorland adventures.

"An absolutely wonderful experience, we wish we had stayed longer than just two nights! We particularly enjoyed the falconry display and the organised walks through Dartmoor National Park. Thank you!"
