Thurles is just off the main Dublin - Cork National Road. Two hours from Dublin by train or car and 1.5 hours from Cork. Killahara Castle is just outside Dovea village, which is only a 5 minute drive from Thurles.
Thurles is a town in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is situated on the River Suir, with a population of around 8,000. It is twinned with Bollington in England and Salt Lake City, Utah, United States.
Thurles was originally a market town, and its name in Irish, Dúrlas Éile, means 'Fort Of Éile', or more correctly Dúrlas Éile UÍ Fhogartaigh, the strong fort of the O'Fogarty's which was part of the early O'Fogarty stronghold, which includes the region of Templemore and Devils Bit.
