Activities

The castle is situated at the heart of a 200 acre estate, perfect for a range of activities.

Shooting

The estate offers a beautiful mixture of heather moorland and deep valleys that produce some of the best grouse, partridge, pheasant and duck shooting in the country.

The Warren Gill Shooting School offers an excellent choice of drives for all standards of clay pigeon shooting, providing tuition at every level.

Horse Riding

The Masham Riding and Treking Centre is adjacent to Swinton Park and at the heart of the estate. The centre provides trekking and basic riding lessons in an outdoor arena.

The riding centre deals with all levels of riding skill and all ages of rider. It is also home to the Dykes Hill Highland Pony Stud with a prize winning lineage of over 30 years.

Walking

There is a wide range of walks available on the 200 acre Swinton Estate.

With miles of footpaths available, the options range from a leisurely stroll beside the River Ure to a trek up onto the moorland Dales. Guests at Swinton Park can also enjoy walks within the beautiful landscaped parkland, with lakes, woodland and a four-acre kitchen garden.

Golf

The charming 9-hole Masham Golf Course is adjacent to the hotel grounds. Hotel guests are able to play at all times, other than when club tournaments are taking place.

Other local 18-hole courses include Bedale, Romanby, Ripon and Catterick. Please ask reception to arrange a tee-time for you.

If you would like to spend a little time improving your skills and technique, you can book a lesson with the golf club PGA Coach, Andy Marshall, allowing you to develop any aspect of your game you need to focus on.

Cycling

With Team GB’s success at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Tour de France starting in Yorkshire, cycling has never been more popular in the Dales.

The Swinton Estate provides a wonderful base for a cycling trip; it offers a wide variety of inclines and terrain, from steep moorland tracks to winding country lanes, all with incredible views across rolling countryside into the Dales.

Both mountain bikes and electric bikes are available for hire and rucksack picnics can made to order for you to enjoy along the way.

Fishing

A wide range of fishing is available on the Swinton Estate, which stretches from the river valley in Wensleydale up onto the moorland Dales.

The five lakes in the parkland at Swinton Park are home to pike, tench and perch. For guests staying at the castle, the Orvis Rod Room is well equipped with Orvis fly rods and flies, jackets, waders, coarse rods – and a drying cupboard for those caught out in the elements! A refundable deposit of £50 applies for use of the rods.

Please note that for all fishing on the Swinton Estate, individuals are responsible for organising their own fishing licences.

Bird Watching

The moors on the Swinton Estate comprise 8000 acres of heather and rise to a height of 540 metres above sea level. Here you can see red grouse, golden plover, curlew, red shank and lapwing, as well as merlin.

There is also a bird hide beside the lake in the grounds at Swinton Park (for hotel and non-resident guest use) for viewing woodland and water birds.
