A beloved heritage and history

Huntington Castle was built in 1625 by Sir Laurence Esmonde, a brave soldier who served under Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. Originally a garrison protecting the Dublin-Wexford trade route, the property was only given the name ‘Huntington’ in 1680, and from then started to evolve into a family home.

In 1687, Sir Laurence II (Esmonde’s grandson) created the beautiful gardens and planted the iconic lime trees leading up the avenue to the castle. Over time, each generation added their own personal touch, from renovations by Sir Laurence IV to the Durdin Robertson family’s architectural updates, all the while shaping the Huntington Castle guests and visitors know today.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, nature lover or simply looking for a peaceful getaway, here are our reasons why this 17th-century property should be your next destination.

Warm Irish hospitality for lasting memories

Huntington Castle and Gardens is primarily a cherished ancestral home to the Durdin Robertson family, comprising Alex and Clare and their three sons, Herbert, Esmonde, and Freddie. Here you’ll be offered the warmest of welcomes as you are personally greeted by the owners and treated as their esteemed guests.

Lizzy, one of our castle experts at Celtic Castles, recently visited Huntington Castle and marvels at the welcome she received:

“The owner, Alex, greeted us with enthusiasm, big smiles and exceptional warmth. Purely from walking through the door at Huntington Castle, the property’s history is very easy to see and Alex is so proud, knowledgeable and generous about his family history.”

A family affair

In 2010, Clare and Alex inherited the castle from Alex’s late father, and have poured their hearts and souls into the unique property ever since, finding endless joy in sharing the magic of Huntington with visitors from all over the world.

Alex fulfils a variety of roles throughout the day and evening, from farmer to castle renovator to tour guide. He also hosts B&B guests and serves tea in the charming tearooms, saying; “It’s a labour of love, and I wouldn't have it any other way.” Clare, just as committed to the exquisite property, is a talented textile artist who curates among the castle’s inspirational surroundings, working from her studio on the estate.

As well as their professional endeavours, the industrious couple are devoted to their young family, commenting, “Our three amazing boys keep us on our toes and remind us daily of the joy in life.”

Feel immediately at home

Guests will have the chance to take a complimentary guided tour of the castle which includes the world famous 'Temple of Isis' in the basement.

Lizzy found the informative tour fascinating and a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the eclectic interiors of the castle that showcase both the couple’s creative style and respect for its architectural heritage:

“The castle has been a family home for centuries and it really does feel like a home when you arrive. The bedrooms are all styled completely differently, and the charm is in the details, from the bed furnishings to ornate bathrooms, keeping the traditional styles true to the castle, whilst being very comfortable and feeling luxurious.”

Special castle features

Guests can choose to stay in one of the historic guest rooms on a bed and breakfast basis or take exclusivity of the self-catering Esmonde Wing (sleeping up to six guests) which overlooks the 14th-century abbey and also incorporates the former family chapel.

Guests have full access to the gardens and grounds and, by prior arrangement, Alex and Clare will gladly organise activities on the estate to complement your stay. Be sure to meander along the 700-year-old yew walk in the grounds - the aforementioned historic lime-tree avenue on the approach to Huntington (planted in 1680s).

Lizzy recalls:

“The grounds are extensive, with hens and peacocks roaming freely and the beautiful gardens are open to the public for tours during the summer months. Alongside these is the working farm, and invariably, Alex is to be found in the sheep pens!”

The Cellars

Extending all the way under the castle, the cellars comprise a handful of rooms, all decorated with rugs, panels and artefacts from the ‘new age’ ministry that Alex’s grandad and great aunt set up in the 1970s.

Treasures around every corner

Lizzy reflects on the authentic setting of Huntington:

“The living areas are stunningly decorated and thoughtfully designed, with the original rooms very much in keeping with the castle’s cherished history, with wall-hung tapestries, original carpets and many ancestors gracing the walls. The huge dining-room fireplace is dated 1625, and the original front door is still in place.”

A stay at Huntington is certainly unique and sure to give you a very special feeling indeed!
