Stay

All year round, Barns Tower looks amazing – whether it’s glowing softly in the peaceful calm of a summer’s evening, or drawing you towards a freshly made log fire on a snowy winter’s day. The vaulted ceiling and rustic wooden panelling give the rooms an irresistibly cosy feel. And after the day’s adventures, what could be better than a long soak in the roll-top bath, and the promise of a delightfully sound sleep in the huge, pillowy sleigh bed? It’s a wonderful place to celebrate a special occasion.

To welcome you to your own private retreat at Barns Tower, you’ll find a delicious breakfast hamper, as well as a selection of gorgeous products from The Highland Soap Company. The log fires are ready to be lit for your arrival...

The tower is sold on a self-catered basis and includes a well-equipped kitchen.

Barns Tower has a magical atmosphere, so it may come as no surprise to discover that the area is steeped in legend and storytelling. It is said that Merlin the Wizard once visited Stobo Kirk, just over the hill. The famous author, John Buchan, came from this area and one of his greatest novels, 'John Burnet of Barns', is set very recognisably right here.

History

Barns Tower was built by William Burnet, 4th Laird of Barns, and his wife, Margaret Stewart of Shillinglaw - a family related to the Stuart earls of nearby Traquair. Their Initials W.B and M.S. are carved above one of the upper floor windows. The dates 1488 and 1489 are carved above the entrance door, but are much too early for the date of construction, perhaps referring to the date the Burnets acquired the estate?

Activities

The town of Peebles, with its coffee shops, fine restaurants, galleries and gift shops, is just a short walk away along the riverbank.

We loved our stay in Barns Tower . The building has such a unique structure and rich history and you feel like you're the king and queen of your own castle . For those who are staying for a week or more - the food hamper includes - 4 pints of milk , eggs , various small sachets of jams , marmalade , honey etc , 2 large bottles of water , a well stocked fruit bowl - including bananas , apples , oranges , pears , 1 granary loaf , tea and coffee - though the coffee is for cafetiere or coffee machine - we personally prefer granulated . Some people may find the stairs a problem - so probably not suitable for the elderly, disabled or anyone with toddlers . The tower is in a great location too - some of the views on the drive down to the tower are just stunning . We also enjoyed our tour of the nearby Neidpath Castle by the lovely Sandy - who was both friendly and informative . A unique and comfortable accommodation for anyone who is reasonably fit and loves their history .

A dream of a property. Unique and exciting with so many lovely original features. Peaceful location with stunning walks into Peebles about an hour’s stroll along the River Tweed. Comms all smooth. Package of breakfast and snack basics much appreciated. Kitchen well equipped and firewood put to good use every night for a snug chillout. Excellent info about the property, history and surrounding area all provided. Be prepared to walk up and down a lot of steps during your stay and the loo in the bedroom and shower room three flights down might not be to everyone’s taste but we loved the quirkiness and the massive front door key. Peebles is a charming town and the people, shops and pubs all lovely and welcoming. We’ll definitely be back.

Beautiful Tower. More than we ever imagined. Loved everything about it. Warm cosy Will definitely be back.

We stayed for 3 nights in Barns Tower. Lulu was very welcoming, attentive and the tower was well supplied with quality items. The grounds are stunning with the river tweed close by for evening walks. Can’t wait to go back.

Beautiful tower in a lovely, quiet location. The tower was everything we could have hoped for and more! Clean, very well equipped and thoughtful touches of milk, eggs, bread and butter supplied. Comfortable bed, good shower and bath. Thoughtfully renovated. Just perfect.
