History
The Earls of Dundee have lived at Birkhill since the 18th century. In 1778, an earlier building was replaced by a new house in the style of Robert Adam. In 1858, the house was enlarged and incorporated within the present structure, which was designed by the well-known Scottish Baronial architect David Bryce. Before then the family had lived at Dudhope Castle, which you can still visit in the city of Dundee.

Our family reunion at Birkhill Castle could not have been more perfect. The staff were fabulous. Thank you to castle managers Jamie and Iona. Butlers Thibault and Dan. Chefs Sam and Callum. And the wonderful housekeeping staff. They helped organize falconry and archery at the castle. Clay pigeon shooting nearby. Food was amazing every day. Exquisite table settings every night for dinner.
For my 40th birthday, I celebrated with 22 friends at Birkhill Castle, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, it was exactly as we imagined – majestic, grand, and completely ours. The ambiance and decor of the castle were impressive, giving a sense of grandeur and exclusivity. Not a single person was disappointed by their rooms; everyone raved about the comfort of their beds. The dining experience was exceptional, with Daniel and Alister being extremely accommodating to some of our guests’ dietary restrictions, even those mentioned at the last minute. We enjoyed having our own corners of the main floor for post-dinner drinks and activities outside by the gardens, pool, beach, driving range, or hiking on the expansive grounds. Jamie and Iona, the castle managers, were essential to our planning and stay. They were thoughtful, generous with their time, and patient with all our questions. We arranged clay pigeon shooting, archery, whiskey tastings, and several dinners, all organized by Jamie and Iona, including transportation. Celebrating my 40th birthday at Birkhill Castle made the occasion incredibly special – every single person said it was the most magical birthday event they had ever been to. I would absolutely recommend Birkhill Castle for similar events. It was completely enchanting
Amazing
We spent a week at Birkhill castle and loved every minute. So private yet so close to everything – an easy drive to all the main attractions. Our family and friends loved it. The location, rooms and views were just perfect!
We rented Birkhill Castle, for a family reunion. We are from Canada, and a bunch of family and friends came with us. We can not say enough good things about the Castle, the host, or staff, everything was perfect. The Grounds are lovely, we enjoyed the swimming pool, The rooms are beautiful. Lady Dundee, even arranged for me to meet my McNabb clan chief, doesn't get any better than that. Truly a wonderful experience, hope to get back
