Fasque Castle
Fettercairn, Laurencekirk, Scotland
Fasque Castle - History
The present castle was completed around 1809 for Sir Alexander Ramsay-Irvine of Balmain, replacing an earlier residence on the estate. Designed as an elegant country house set within extensive parkland, it reflected the prominence and prosperity of the family, whose connection to the surrounding lands stretched back for generations.
A significant new chapter in Fasque's history began in 1829 when the estate was purchased by Sir John Gladstone. It subsequently became the Scottish home of the Gladstone family and is closely associated with his son, William Ewart Gladstone, one of Britain's most influential Victorian statesmen. Serving four times as Prime Minister during Queen Victoria's reign, Gladstone spent much of his private life at Fasque, cementing the estate's place in British political history.
Today, Fasque remains a remarkable example of Scotland's architectural and cultural heritage. Carefully preserved and sensitively restored, the estate retains much of its historic character, offering guests the opportunity to experience the grandeur, tranquillity and timeless appeal of a distinguished Scottish country estate.
