Grade I listed hall in a quiet and secluded North Yorkshire valley
Grade I listed Howsham Hall sits in a quiet, secluded valley to the north-east of York in the spectacular landscape of North Yorkshire. Once a family home for over 350 years, the hall has been carefully transformed into a luxurious countryside retreat, offering privacy, character and timeless elegance for your wedding.
Just 20 minutes from the famous historic city, this 400-year-old property feels wonderfully remote while remaining easily accessible. A sweeping mile-long driveway leads you through the gatehouses and into your own private oasis. Here, the convenience of a major travel hub is paired with the peace and beauty of an unspoilt estate and wider countryside.
Exclusivity, Elegance and Enduring Charm
Set above the River Derwent and overlooking the valley beyond, the imposing hall provides a spectacular natural backdrop for your celebration. The interior blends historic features with a light, contemporary aesthetic - created by acclaimed designer James Perkins - allowing Howsham’s signature character to shine, enhanced by modern comforts.
A Wedding Weekend to Remember
Howsham Hall invites you to turn your wedding day into a relaxed, memory-filled weekend. Whether you envision an intimate gathering or a grand celebration, a formal wedding breakfast or a more informal feast, the hall offers a beautiful and versatile setting for every style. Exclusive use of the property either side of your wedding day allows you to fully enjoy the elegant rooms, luxurious accommodation and opportunities to explore the estate at your leisure.
Your wedding day is tailored entirely to your requirements, supported by a dedicated wedding manager, from the moment you book through to the day itself. From the warmth and colour of summer to the glow of roaring fires, candlelight and mulled wine in winter, Howsham Hall offers a magical setting in every season.
Your Ceremony
Howsham Hall is licensed for both indoor and outdoor civil ceremonies, with spaces to suit celebrations of 60 to 150 guests.
Indoors, imagine descending the grand staircase before entering the Great Hall beneath antique chandeliers, richly toned walls and intricately sculpted cornices. A snow-white aisle leads you to exchange vows framed by the vast Jacobean windows, with peaceful, tree-dotted parkland beyond. In the warmer months, your ceremony can be held outdoors on the front lawn, with the hall itself providing an impressive and romantic backdrop.
Drinks' Reception Spaces
The Riverside Terrace offers a delightful outdoor setting for your drinks' receptions, where dappled sunlight and the gentle murmur of the river create a serene atmosphere. The south lawns stretch away from the house, opening onto uninterrupted views across the parkland.
Indoors, guests may gather in the sweeping Staircase Hall, complete with its own bar, before exploring further spaces throughout the house.
Drinks and canapés can also be enjoyed in the Billiards Room, or guests may choose a relaxed game of snooker as the celebrations unfold.
Discover the Grounds
Guests are warmly encouraged to explore the estate. Children will delight in running through the gardens and shrubbery, while croquet or traditional garden games can be arranged on the lawns. The grounds are a photographer’s dream. Take time as a newly married couple to wander the parkland together, capturing natural, timeless images among the trees, river and rolling landscape.
Your Wedding Dinner
Howsham Hall can host a wedding dinner for up to 96 guests in a single space, with up to 150 accommodated across the Drawing Room and Main Hall.
The Drawing Room provides a refined yet flexible canvas, with polished wooden floors, shimmering mirrors and an abundance of natural light streaming through original white pillar-framed windows - allowing your own style and vision to take centre stage.
Award-winning hospitality ensures an exceptional dining experience for you and your guests. With an extensive selection of menus - and the option of a bespoke menu tailored just for you - you’re guaranteed to dine in style.
Into the Evening
After the wedding breakfast and speeches, you and up to 150 guests are welcome to move into the evening spaces for your first dance and celebrations long into the night.
Quirky design details and distinctive features make Howsham Hall perfectly suited to celebration, while the striking chequered dance floor - set slightly apart - offers space for everything from a fun, choreographed routine to a classic slow dance.
Throughout the evening, guests can step out into the gravel courtyard, enclosed by exposed rustic stone and brick, to admire the evening sky and enjoy conversation and laughter under the stars.
