Killochan Castle

Nestled in breath-taking Ayrshire coastal countryside, on the banks of the River Girvan, stands the commanding 14th-century Killochan Castle. Accessed along a winding woodland drive that gives way to a courtyard, manicured lawn and relaxed formal gardens, the estate is just an hour from Glasgow.

Authentic and sensitively restored, the welcoming Killochan Castle and its three cottages are available on an exclusive-hire basis, ideal for family gatherings, meetings, events, filming locations and golf at some of the UK’s most prestigious courses.

The Castle

Killochan is a grade-A listed stone building, dating back 700 years. Its rich history can be felt in each and every room; from the hustle and bustle of the castle cellars and kitchens to the elegance and tranquillity of the luxurious bedrooms dotted throughout, each and every space in the castle has a story to tell.

The Great Hall

Impressive and spacious, The Great Hall is the heart of the castle. It is graced with antique furniture, artwork depicting historical scenes and events associated with the castle; it boasts a restored original grand fireplace plus an impressive chandelier over 2 metres in length. The outstanding ceiling mural was created by an Italian artist from Florence. It’s a fantastic hand-painted artwork depicting the 1513 Battle of Flodden, in which three members of the Cathcart clan died in a battle against the English forces.

In the Great Hall, you will find access to two more turret staircases; the service staircase and the secret staircase leading you to one of the master bedrooms above.

The Dining Room

A beautiful and magnificent room, it is exquisitely decorated with a trompe l’oeil effect ceiling and an imposing dining table at the centre, laid with the finest antique silverware sourced from the most established silver traders in London.

The period dining room has been restored to its former glory, allowing ample space for drinks and gatherings. Private chefs from some of Britain’s finest hotels and restaurants are on hand to prepare your bespoke and select menus.

The castle has been the grand setting for many banquets in its time; the opportunity to rekindle and be part of this unique setting’s history is truly unrivalled.

Accommodation

The castle and cottages offer a combined total of 22 bedrooms, sleeping up to 44 guests. A number of roll-away beds can also be added for younger children.

Castle Rooms

There are ten guest rooms within the castle, each with its own distinct charm. Some have four-poster beds, many have historical Edwardian fixtures and fittings, some have hidden doorways and one even has a private spiralling route to the castle turret. Decorated in rich colours and sumptuous fabrics in detailed design, bedrooms are ambiently lit and feature large sash windows.

The Gatehouse is connected to the castle across the courtyard and sleeps a further 6 guests

Cottages

There are two cottages close by which can be booked alongside the castle, in total offering accommodation for an additional 16 guests. Each cottage has a character of its own with features such as large open fires, luxury décor, comfortable furniture and sumptuous beds.

Self-Catering Kitchen

Whilst full catering can be provided, guests may also choose to self-cater. The kitchen features a large double door fridge and additional storage fridge, with a large range oven with six hobs above. Also available is a microwave, Quooker (instant hot water tap), and outdoor barbecue. Assistance can be offered by estate staff to help operate any of the equipment.

The Snug

With a whole castle at your disposal to discover, who knows what you will find behind all the little doors, and secret walls?! A sneak peak into The Snug, where the whisky is enjoyed, and the stories can be told long into the night!

TV Room

One of the most welcoming, comfortable rooms in the castle is The TV Room. Perfect for relaxing after a day of recreational activities in the grounds or for pulling out the board games for a family night of trivia and friendly competition.

Cinema Room

Watching movies in The Cinema Room is one of life’s great pleasures. The seats are comfortable, and the sound system is perfect for a great night when you want to escape through the magic of the silver screen.

Happy Hour Deck

Climb to the highest point in the castle and you will experience the most breath taking views of the countryside, towards the town of Girvan and beyond the Firth of Clyde. Eagles may well swoop beneath you, deer can be seen in the neighbouring woods and fields, The Happy Hour Deck is simply ‘The Vantage Point’.

Outdoor Seating on the Lawn

This gazebo-style seating area is enclosed by a charming timber frame and slate roof, making it a peaceful, cosy retreat from which to relax over a drink and admire pleasing views across the immediate grounds, the castle façade and surrounding countryside.

Games Room and Gym

The castle's Games Room is a spacious, inviting area featuring a billiards table, table football, a dart board and vintage board games. There’s also a fully stocked intimate bar with stools, a cosy settee and a generously sized seating corner, perfect for a game of cards. The adjacent Gym boasts modern equipment for fitness enthusiasts, including cardio machines and weights. Guests immediately feel at home here, where they can play, relax, socialise and exercise in a characterful space.

The Estate

The castle is set amongst a 143-acre estate of ancient woodlands, rivers and streams, wildlife and landscaped gardens. The estate has both fishing & stalking rights, which are available to guests during their stay.

Guests can enjoy a range of activities on the varied Killochan Estate. Explore the bespoke hiking and biking trails, try your hand at archery or falconry and even take part in Highland Games events.

Nearby you can visit the sandy beaches at Girvan or the Robert Burns Birth Place Museum in the beautiful village of Alloway.

History

Killochan Castle dates back to the 16th century. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times and gradually fell into ruin then in the 19th century it was renovated by Sir Thomas Kennedy of the Kennedy family, a prominent and influential clan in the region known for their strong political ties and connections to the Scottish royal family. The Kennedy family’s legacy remains a notable feature of the site, reflecting their importance in Ayrshire's history.
