The rooms enjoy fantastic views over Hawkstone Park and across the Shropshire plain to the Welsh Hills, one of the few Grade 1-listed landscapes in the country. The three-acre garden is spectacular – it has been open under the National Gardens Scheme for 85 years – and the property sits in 200 acres of its own farmland.

The Citadel is grand and spacious but delivers warm, family-led hospitality and very comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation. Guests have full use of the West Sitting Room with its grand piano and wood-burning stove, perfect for winter evenings. The adjoining Billiard Room has a full-sized table and games cupboard. WIFI is available throughout the whole property for all guests to enjoy.

After a good night’s sleep, breakfast is taken in the elegant dining room that boasts a high ceiling embossed with vines, where guests experience a house party atmosphere, eating and chatting around a large Regency table. This beautifully furnished and positioned home guarantees its guests a very memorable stay.

Your Hosts

Martin, Alexandra and their family, enjoy sharing their unusual home and are well versed in the history of the house and the places of interest in the surrounding area. Martin has lived at The Citadel since he was 6 years old, moving in when his grandparents downsized to a smaller, local property. He is particularly involved in maintaining the extensive garden, alongside his own father, who has lovingly tended and developed the landscape for almost 50 years. The Citadel was awarded a plaque by the National Gardens Scheme for 85 years of opening the gardens to the public from 1927-2012. In fact, the gardens are still open each May when the spectacular rhododendrons come into bloom.

The Area

Maynards, a Rick Stein-recognised farm shop and the prestigious Hawkstone Park Golf Course are just few minutes' drive away.

Hawkstone Park Follies is right on the doorstep. These 100 acres of stunning natural landscape, including bridges, towers and caves, have been inspiring visitors for over 250 years.

The Citadel is situated 12 miles north of Shrewsbury, birthplace of world-renowned naturalist Charles Darwin. A walk along the river, through The Quarry, is a must, of special interest is The Dingle, a planting scheme created by Percy Thrower who was the park's superintendent for many years. Shrewsbury's Tudor centre of half-timbered houses, independent shops, cafes and restaurants is also an enjoyable day out. The tourist information centre is situated in the central Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, opposite the beautiful Old Market Hall Cinema in The Square.

For those wanting to go further afield, the deer park, house and gardens of National Trust Attingham Park is recommended. There is also much to see in the neighbouring Shropshire towns of Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Ironbridge.
