First built in the 13th century, and then rebuilt in the 16th century as the home of the Maitland family, Thirlestane Castle sits amidst a quiet meadow landscape in lowland Scotland yet is only 25 miles south of Scotland's capital, Edinburgh.

The Earl & Countess (sleeps 6)

A three-bedroom apartment on the second floor, this space was formerly the private quarters of the 14th Earl and Countess of Lauderdale. Accessed by one of the castle's grand sweeping staircases and offering fabulous views out over the parkland!

The Glenburnie (sleeps 2)

A one-bedroom apartment set in the heart of the historic south-wing. The most recently renovated apartment in the castle, this open-plan space is dominated by large portraits by George and John Scougall from the castle's collection featuring two of the castle’s forbears.

A one-bedroom apartment set in the historic south-wing. Once the butler's apartment, the more traditional baronial style is present throughout this apartment's soft furnishings. The luxurious free-standing roll-top bath is one of this apartment's biggest selling features!

Exclusive Use

With its tranquil parkland setting by the banks of the River Leader, Thirlestane Castle is the perfect getaway for a family gathering, celebration or for those enjoying country sports locally. The five apartments above can be hired together to provide luxury accommodation for groups of up to sixteen people.

Guests can dine in the grand, portrait-lined State Dining Room or the castle’s original Victorian Kitchen with its vaulted ceiling and 19th-century range oven. There is also the option to use other areas of the castle such as the historic Billiards Room or for a more rustic experience why not have a BBQ in the Cobbled Courtyard.

A complimentary tour of the castle is included for all guests while they are staying and the castle can help organise additional group activities such as a falconry display, whisky tasting or a bagpiper's welcome. We can even arrange an exclusive tour of the Borders or for a therapist to come and provide spa treatments within your accommodation to complete a truly memorable stay.

Family home to the Duke of Lauderdale, Thirlestane Castle remains home to the Maitlands today; more than 400 years of family history sit behind these walls.

The gardens and public rooms within the castle are open to the public throughout the summer months each year and offer a great opportunity to explore Scottish history during your time in The Borders of Scotland.
