History

Crom Castle’s rich history dates back to the early 17th century. It has played host to aristocrats, diplomats, dignitaries and members of the Royal Family throughout each era. The original house was built in 1611 by Scottish planter Michael Balfour, Laird of Mountwhinney, as part of the Plantation of Ulster. Constructed of lime and stone and enclosed within a protective bawn (defensive wall), the Old Castle followed the typical pattern for plantation of its era.

My wife and I were so glad to have brought our family there for holiday. Lord Erne and the staff were completely welcoming, and the activities - in our case falconry, a boat tour of Lough Erne and a gin and whiskey tasting - were friendly, fascinating and completely local. As for the castle itself and its grounds, it is the stuff of fairy tales; one feels the presence of lords and ladies as well as the royalty said to have visited. By the same token Lord Erne is a down-to-earth gentleman in the modern mode, and fortunately for contemporary guests, the plumbing and electric have been upgraded sufficiently to keep one warm and well lit. We highly recommend a visit!

Very intimate and secluded setting with upgraded amenities. Its a once and a lifetime experience that I would recommend. Lord Erne is a great host and there are many attractions in the area. I recommend the marble arch caves and having at least one meal catered at the castle through Cynthia. You will not be disappointed with Crom Castle.

That was a sensational three days with you and all of your wonderful staff/friends who made us feel so welcome and gave us so much fun and filled everyone with delight. It is a unique and amazing experience. Thank you all hugely. Marianne G

John, you were the best host in looking after everyone. It's a matter of going the extra mile, which you did. It's a gift!! Lovely seeing Harriet again - though all too brief. Francis Joan and the team were great and very attentive. Always a genuine smile. I loved our musical evening. Oh, Danny Boy!! Antony
