My Most Memorable Castle Experiences
One of my most memorable castle experiences was waking up in Killochan Castle on a sunny winter morning, ascending the winding stone staircase to the roof and enjoying panoramic views across the frosty landscape. I also enjoyed exploring the estate surrounding Swinton Park on a similarly cold, sunny winter's day. I'd definitely say castle stays are not only for the warmer months!
Food has also been another highlight of my castle visits with some particularly memorable meals being enjoyed at Coombe Abbey and Dalhousie Castle. When it comes to atmosphere, dining in The Great Hall at Borthwick Castle takes some beating!
Discovering history is always enjoyable to me, I learnt lots about the history of Thornbury Castle during my visit there, and Traquair House is a place I’ve visited on a couple of occasions which along with being Scotland’s oldest inhabited home has its own on-site museum. One of the more unique historic experiences was during a stay at Carlton Towers where I slept in a room with a window in the floor exposing the hidden Priest Hole below.
