A Murder Mystery Experience at Coombe Abbey: Our Team Stay
What if your overnight castle stay wasn't just a getaway - but a fully immersive evening of theatre, suspense, and storytelling set inside a 12th-century abbey?
In Spring 2026, a group of the Celtic Castles team experienced exactly that during a stay at the magnificent Coombe Abbey nestled in magnificent parkland in the West Midlands, just two hours from London. This enchanting setting offered an unique take on historic hospitality, combining centuries of heritage with a lively, interactive murder mystery evening.

Arriving at a 12th-Century Abbey in the Heart of Warwickshire
The journey into Coombe Abbey is a moment in itself. As you drive through landscaped gardens and along a sweeping tree-lined avenue, the abbey gradually emerges into view, its dramatic stone façade rising like something from a period drama.
Originally founded in the 1100s as a Cistercian monastery, Coombe Abbey has lived many lives. It has welcomed royalty, including Princess Elizabeth Stuart in the early 17th century, before being carefully restored as a country house hotel in the 1990s.
Roger, The Castle Man, commented:
"When you arrive at Coombe, you have to check if you are in England or France… is this a château? No, it is a 12th-century abbey, now a historic hotel surrounded by 500 acres of Warwickshire countryside for you to enjoy. As you walk into the property, you feel the history surrounding you."
From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere shifts completely - and everyday life feels a long way away.
First Impressions: Gothic Grandeur and Living History

Stepping through the main entrance, you are immediately surrounded by centuries of character: ornate stonework, Gothic chandeliers, throne-like seating and tall windows dressed with rich drapery.
Julie described the setting:
"The grandeur of the entrance as you step into the abbey is striking; with so many turreted hide-aways, nooks and crannies, it would be easy to lose yourself or simply while the time away with a good book or favourite tipple!"
It really is the sort of place that makes you pause for a moment and take in the atmosphere: carved wood, ancient portraits or intricate plasterwork that hints at the building's long and fascinating past.
Lizzy added further context to the building's unique character:
"A magnificent introduction to the abbey from the moment you walk through the door. The history of the building is apparent from the glorious stained glass in the main entryway, the pulpit adapted to a cosy seating area, and the confessional boxes still there for anyone who needs them!"
Every corridor feels like it holds a story - every corner revealing another layer of history.
Behind the Scenes: Exploring the Event Spaces
One of the things that makes Coombe Abbey so special is the sheer variety of spaces within the building. From grand banqueting halls to more intimate dining rooms, the abbey has hosted everything from lavish weddings to corporate celebrations and themed events over the years. Since opening as a hotel in the 1990s, it has become one of the Midlands' most popular historic venues, each space exuding its own personality.
Seamy shared his thoughts on the interiors:
"Seeing the event spaces at Coombe Abbey was a real treat! There was such an attention to detail in every room, and Jo (who greeted the team on arrival and showed us around the hotel) did a great job of bringing them to life."
This versatility is part of what makes Coombe Abbey such a sought-after destination - a place where history and modern hospitality merge into a unique experience.
Bedrooms: Character with Comfort

Each bedroom at Coombe Abbey is unique, combining period charm with comfort and practicality. Some feel regal and richly decorated, while others are softer and more contemporary in style, with many hidden quirks, including bathrooms tucked behind bookcases and four-poster beds set on elevated platforms.
Amy shared a snapshot:
"My room was spacious, elegant and invited relaxation with its pale yellow hued walls, large windows allowing in fresh air, and pretty views over the glass roof of the Garden Room Restaurant. It had ample facilities, including a hot drinks station, and individual en-suite toilet and shower rooms."
Each of the bedrooms are easily accessible off wide corridors, just a few steps from the grand central staircase of the abbey, allowing guests to move around the historic building with ease.
The Estate: 500 Acres of Capability Brown Landscape

Coombe Abbey sits within the wider Coombe Abbey Park, a vast 500-acre parkland estate shaped in part by the celebrated landscape designer Capability Brown.
Lakeside walks, play areas and woodland trails surround the striking property, offering guests ample space to unwind and explore, while colourful flower beds, sculpted topiary gardens and sweeping lawns encasing the property provide a picturesque backdrop to formal events. It is easy to imagine the estate at its finest - bathed in sunshine, alive with guests and wildlife, and offering quiet corners in which to escape.
The Murder Mystery Experience: When the Abbey Becomes a Stage

The highlight of our stay was the evening Murder Mystery experience, a signature event at Coombe Abbey that transforms the historic Abbeygate into a theatrical dining stage.
Guests gathered for drinks before being transported back to 1855 by our host, Lord Craven. What followed was an immersive evening of storytelling, clues, suspicion, and theatrical performances - all woven around a delicious three-course dinner (with hot plates!) and a glass or two of house wine.
Louisa at Celtic Castles described her experience:
"Coombe Abbey was an unexpected surprise. Stunning architecture, and features throughout, with comfortable rooms and lovely food. The entertainment team were fabulous and the Murder Mystery evening was a lovely addition to our trip."
The combination of live performance, dining, and audience participation made the evening feel truly interactive - part theatre, part social experience and entirely memorable.
A Relaxed End to a Dramatic Evening

As the story unfolded, suspicions rose, secrets were revealed, and ultimately the culprit was unmasked. Justice was served, and the evening transitioned into relaxed conversation and laughter over a nightcap in the Garden Bar.
This cosy, informal space with its white wooden tables and wicker chairs set against a botanical backdrop was a charming space in which to unwind after an immersive evening. The atmosphere was calm, relaxed, and the ideal contrast to the night's earlier theatrics.
Morning at the Garden Room Restaurant
The following morning, breakfast was served in the bright and elegant Garden Room - a fresh and welcoming light-filled conservatory-style restaurant, complete with leafy décor and delightful views across the estate.
A tempting and generous selection of hot drinks, continental treats and cooked breakfast options made for a relaxed and refreshing start to the day and set us up nicely for the journey home.
Lizzy expands on Coombe's dining experiences:
"The wonderful conservatory area provides a glorious space for afternoon teas and socialising with friends, while the grand formal rooms have been adapted to suit today's event and corporate business needs, showing the true diversity of the abbey and estate."
